I held off buying a 70-200mm for years, telling myself my 24-70mm covered enough range for most of what I shot. A ceremony at a venue that didn't allow photographers past the back row, with a couple who wanted genuine, unposed emotional reactions rather than posed shots, is what finally forced the purchase.
It's a full-frame telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount, launched at $2,798, roughly 30 percent lighter than the original version it replaced while improving optical performance across the range.
Shot from the back of that ceremony at 200mm, I got a tight, genuinely intimate shot of the groom's reaction during vows, visible emotion on his face, filling the frame, despite standing far enough back that he had no idea a camera was that close. No amount of cropping a wider shot after the fact would have matched that resolution or that framing, since cropping in post throws away actual pixel detail that a longer lens captures natively.
This lens is noticeably heavier than my 24-70mm, and a full ceremony held at this focal length, tracking a couple across an aisle, left my shooting arm genuinely tired by the end in a way shorter lenses never do. I've since started using a shoulder strap rig specifically to distribute the weight during longer ceremonies, which helped considerably. That said, the Mark II version I own is meaningfully lighter than the original 70-200mm GM it replaced, which matters over a full wedding day.
Paired with my A7 IV, autofocus tracked a flower girl walking unpredictably down the aisle without hunting, even at the long end of the zoom range where depth of field is thin enough that a small focus miss becomes obvious immediately at full resolution.
Shooting portraits at 200mm and f/2.8 produces background separation that a 24-70mm simply cannot match at any aperture, given the physics of focal length compression combined with a wide aperture. Faces stay critically sharp while backgrounds turn into genuinely smooth, creamy blur, even with a moderately busy background behind the subject.
For anything requiring me to be physically close to a subject, detail shots of rings, table settings, close interaction between a couple, this lens is the wrong tool, since the minimum focusing distance at the long end of the zoom is too far for tight close-up work. I still carry my 24-70mm for that half of a wedding day, switching lenses as the shoot moves between wide coverage and tight, close moments.
Handheld at 200mm, a focal length that normally amplifies any small hand movement dramatically, stabilization let me shoot as slow as 1/60 with acceptably sharp results during a dim indoor ceremony. I wouldn't push it much slower than that reliably, but it bought real flexibility in light I'd otherwise have needed to raise ISO significantly to compensate for.
I own a Sigma 100-400mm as a longer, cheaper alternative for outdoor and travel work, and shooting the same subjects with both lenses side by side, the Sony's constant f/2.8 aperture produces noticeably better background separation and better low-light performance than the Sigma's variable f/5-6.3 range, exactly the tradeoff you'd expect given the price difference. The Sigma still earns a place in my bag for travel, where its lighter weight and longer reach matter more than the Sony's wider aperture, but for ceremony work specifically, the constant f/2.8 is the deciding factor.
I borrowed a 1.4x teleconverter for one outdoor ceremony to extend reach to roughly 280mm equivalent, and autofocus speed dropped noticeably with the converter attached, still usable for a relatively still subject like a couple during vows, but I wouldn't trust it for anything genuinely fast-moving. For the rare situation where 200mm genuinely isn't enough reach, it's a usable option, but not one I'd rely on as a primary shooting configuration.
This is a genuinely expensive lens, and I don't think it's the right first purchase for anyone building a kit from nothing. But for anyone already shooting weddings or events regularly who keeps running into physical distance restrictions from subjects, it solves a problem no amount of technique with a shorter lens can fully replace.
